PFC Ernest Paul Howard
3rd Battalion of 327th Glider Infantry Regiment, and 1st Battalion of 401st Glider Infantry Regiment, were situated in defense of the area of Flamierge, Flamizoulle, and the St. Hubert highway, west of Mande-St.-Étienne. This area was on the west side of the Bastogne perimeter, held by the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division.
On December 23, 1944, German tanks accompanied by infantry in snowsuits, approached from the woods to the south of St. Hubert Road. Charlie Company’s positions came under heavy enemy fire, hitting several men, destroying the company aid station, an antitank gun, and a pile of mortar ammunition. During this attack, PFC Ernest Paul Howard of Charlie Company was killed in action.
PFC Howard was born in Guysville, Athens County, Ohio, on October 21, 1922, and died on December 23, 1944, at the age of 22. Another Screaming Eagle had soared to the ultimate height. 🦅
Ernest left behind his wife, Mrs. Gloria Butler Howard, of The Plains, Ohio, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard of Guysville, Ohio. He rests eternally at the Saint John’s Cemetery, Anthony, Athens County, Ohio.
PFC Howard was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart Medal.
