PFC Dwight A. Hull
Today we honor and remember PFC Dwight A. Hull of the 101st Airborne Division.
Private First Class (PFC) Dwight Arthard Hull of Able Company, 401st Glider Infantry Regiment (GIR), 101st Airborne Division, was born in Taintor, Mahaska County, Iowa, to Artald G. and Violet L. (White) Hull on June 3, 1923.
He had one brother, Glynn D., and three sisters, Lois B., Marilyn L. Hull, and Dawn A., his twin sister. His brother Glynn served as an officer within the U.S. Air Force during WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
Dwight Hull attended four years of high school and entered the U.S. Army from Camp Dodge, Johnston, Iowa, on March 6, 1943. He received his basic training at Camp Roberts, California, before being transferred to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he was assigned to the 401st GIR. He boarded the HMS Strathnaver to sail overseas on September 4, 1943, and arrived several weeks later in Liverpool, England, on October 18th.
PFC Hull took part in the actions of Able Company, 401st GIR, in Normandy and returned to England at the beginning of July 1944.
After being granted a seven-day leave period starting July 17, he would begin preparations for his next deployment with the 101st Airborne Division – Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, which started on September 17, 1944.
PFC Dwight A. Hull was Killed in Action on the Island, the Netherlands, on October 9, 1944, at the age of 21 years old. He was probably in a defense position that day to the north of the Island, along the Nederrijn River, and killed during one of several engagements with the enemy that day.

PFC Dwight Hull was first buried at the temporary American Cemetery of Molenhoek, the Netherlands, at Block G, Row 5, Grave 95. He was later re-buried and rests eternally at Block G, Row 1, Grave 1, of the Netherlands American War Cemetery Margraten, Margraten, the Netherlands. He is also remembered at Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa. May he rest in peace.
