PFC Lester L. Abraham
Today we honor and remember PFC Lester L. Abraham of the 101st Airborne Division.
Private First Class (PFC) Lester Lockwood Abraham of the Medical Detachment, 327th Glider Infantry Regiment (GIR), 101st Airborne Division, was born in Mansfield, Desoto County, Louisiana, to Joseph J. and Beulah M. (Cox) Abraham on May 12, 1913. He had two sisters, Laverne E. and Isabelle T., and one brother, Leo H.J. Abraham.
Lester Abraham registered for the draft in 1940 while he was unemployed. He would eventually enlist in the U.S. Army in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on March 12, 1942 - as a single man at the age of 29 years old.
PFC Abraham received his basic training at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He would be assigned as a medic to the 327th.
On September 18, 1944, the second day of the Market Garden Operation, 2nd and 3rd Battalion of the 327th left its airports in England by glider, followed on the next day by the glidermen of 1st Battalion. The gliders of these three battalions headed for Landing Zone W.
Then on September 22, the 327th participated in the defense of Veghel. Several medics of the 327th Medical Detachment were wounded that day, but PFC Lester Abraham made the ultimate sacrifice. The circumstances that led to his death are unknown.
Another Screaming Eagle had soared to the ultimate height. 🦅
PFC Lester L. Abraham rests eternally at the American War Cemetery Margraten, at Plot B, Row 7, Grave 29. May he rest in peace.
