PVT Lee Arthur Dougherty
Today we honor and remember PVT Lee A. Dougherty of the 101st Airborne Division, who was killed in The Battle of the Bulge.
According to the book Rendezvous with Destiny, the days between January 6-8, 1945, were quiet for the men of the 101st Airborne Division on the Bastogne frontline.
While every man killed in action is always one too many, only two units reported a trooper making the ultimate sacrifice on January 8. One of those men was PVT Lee Arthur Dougherty of George Company, 3rd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment.
PVT Dougherty was first seriously wounded in action on December 19, 1944. He returned to George Company on January 5, 1945, only to be killed in action three days later on January 8.
Another Screaming Eagle soared to the ultimate height. 🦅
Born on May 10, 1923, in Palomar, Los Angeles, California, Lee Dougherty died at the age of 21. He left behind his parents, Mr. Arthur C. Dougherty and Mrs. Myra A. Tuason, his stepfather, Marshall Tuason, five brothers, and two sisters. One sister died in infancy. At the time of his death, his parents were divorced.
PVT Lee Dougherty rests eternally in Westminster Memorial Park, Westminster, Orange County, California. He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart Medal, with Oakleaf Cluster in all probability.
